Heart Disease Prevention
A Word About Prevention of Coronary Artery Disease
Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.
Prevention is classified as primary prevention and secondary prevention.
Secondary prevention is the prevention of the progression or recurrence of
disease among those with already diagnosed coronary artery disease. That is,
prevention of 2nd heart attacks, development of congestive heart failure
following angioplasty or coronary artery bypass graft surgery, etc. Primary
prevention, as the words imply, is the attempt to prevent coronary artery
disease via behavioral changes and environmental changes by "risk
reduction". Primary prevention is the goal in those who do not have evidence
for clinical coronary heart diseae. The underlying goal of primary
prevention is to prevent atherosclerosis, the main culprit in the
development and progression of coronary artery disease.
